Saxophone, one of the Western instruments to storm into the Carnatic
arena in recent times, is a single-reed wind instrument. Unlike the Nagaswaram
and the Clarinet, which have bodies made of wood, the
Saxophone has a metal body. In fact, it is a cross between an Oboe and a
Clarinet, with a complicated set of keys that help bring different shades, tones
and colours to the music. However, in order to suit the requirements of Carnatic
music, a few minor changes have been made. A very popular instrument today, as
is evident from the increasing number of Saxophone exponents.
