GRAND CELEBRATION OF SEMMANGUDI'S BIRTHDAY

Carnatica.com celebrated the 95th birthday of the doyen of Carnatic music, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, in association with Sri Krishna Sweets on 6th August 2002 at Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Chennai, in a novel way.

Prasadams from as many as one hundred and twenty temples from all over Tamilnadu were brought and offered to him amidst Veda ghosham by the pundits. The first prasadam was from the temple of Semmangudi, his hometown. The entire evening had an aura of divinity with Veda ghosham on one side and music on the other. The frangrance of incense and flowers filled the place.

The dignitaries and musicians present there seemed like the "Who's Who" of Chennai, and included T K Govinda Rao, B Rajam Iyer, S R Janakiraman, M S Anantaraman, Sri. M S Gopalakrishnan, M S Anantharaman, Smt. Seetha Narayanan, Smt. Lakshmi Rangarajan, Smt. Vasundara Rajagopalan, Smt. M Narmada, Smt. Y G Parthasarathy, Sri. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty and Sri. B R Kumar, among others.

The music fraternity including rasikas, who had thronged the big hall in huge numbers, felt fortunate to receive the blessings of the legendary Sangeeta Pitamaha, as Semmangudi Mama is popularly known, on this auspicious occasion. This also happened to be another important day in the Tamil calendar, being the day of Pradosham, falling on the star of Arudra.

Semmangudi Mama, despite his frail health, sat through the whole affair and spoke to the gathering and blessed them.
