ACADEMY AWARDS ANNOUNCED!

    
Senior flute duo, Sikkil Sisters, Kunjumani and Neela will receive this year's Sangeeta Kalanidhi. No big surprises there for the Sikkil sisters were in hot contention even last year.

The Music Academy announced its awards for the December music season after a considerable delay as it has been entangled in a lot of legal issues in recent times.

This year being the Academy's platinum jubilee year, there will also be a special award, the Platinum Jubilee award that will be conferred on three of the living legends in the field of Carnatic music, namely, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M S Subbulakshmi and D K Pattammal. Well-known Hindustani musician and sitarist Ravi Shankar will also be conferred with this award.

The other usual awards that the Academy confers are the Sangeeta Kala Acharya, which will go to senior vocalists T R Subramaniam and Nookula Chinna Satyanarayana, and the octagenarian vainika Kalpagam Swaminathan; the TTK awards, which will go to Tevaram exponent Dharmapuram Swaminathan, renowned Harikatha exponent Kalyanapuram Aravamudan and senior dance guru Kalyanasundaram Pillai this year. The living composer award will be conferred on Dr. V V Srivatsa.

The President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam is expected to flag off the platinum jubilee celebrations, which will take place around mid-December.

A K C Natarajan, Bombay Sisters and S Rajam to be honoured:

Well-known Clarinet vidwan A K C Natarajan, who is currently touring the US will receive Narada Gana Sabha's prestigious title Nadabrahmam.

The Tyaga Brahma Gana Sabha will honour senior vocalists, C Saroja and C Lalita, popularly known as the Bombay Sisters, with the title of Vani Kala Sudhakara. Veteran violinist V Tyagarajan, Kanjira artiste K S Rangachari and Bharatanatyam exponent Manjula Lusti Narasimhan will also be recognised on this occasion with the same title. The Sabha recently undertook a major renovation of its auditorium.

S Rajam, senior musician-musicologist-painter will be honoured with the Mudhra's Award of Excellence. All these titles will be conferred on the artistes during one of Chennai's popular attractions, the December music festival.
