A LETTER TO NRI MUSICIANS AND DANCERS

Here is an open letter from the management of Hamsadhwani, the only Sabha in Chennai to have an NRI music festival, to NRI musicians and dancers.

Hamsadhwani extends its warm greetings to NRI musicians and patrons of our Carnatic system. Hamsadhwani will hold its eighth NRI annual festival of 35 concerts (two a day) from December 15 lasting till December 31 this year (2002).

Hitherto we held music recitals only. Taking advantage of the excellent permanent stage that has been built, we contemplate introducing a limited number of dance performances as well in response to persistent requests from NRI dancers all these years.

Beginning with 4 concerts 8 years ago, the programme has swelled to 40. This series is most expensive to us as we meet the costs totally from our own resources. We get no sponsorship support whatever for NRI festival. We do not mind the financial burden because we offer happiness to you NRIs who work hard on your music what with your job pressures abroad. We appreciate that you spend enormous amounts of money to come to India and the least we can do is to provide you a platform.

The only thing we expect of you is that you become a patron member (a one time payment obviously). Our experience is that NRI musicians abroad respond to our request with pleasure. We remunerate you as we do for our artistes here. The festival has brought us immense satisfaction and earned us a distinctive reputation.

We appeal NRIs who are already performing for us and are planning to visit Chennai during this December to communicate to us about the duration of your stay here and the days you are available to schedule your programme. Artistes of merit who have not performed in our series so far are welcome to apply enclosing biodata. Please reply by September 30, 2002.

Our appeal extends to NRI dancers too.

Since the NRI concerts keep on expanding, every year we wish to open a separate corpus named NRI Corpus Fund to take care of the funding. It will be utilised solely to promote your art.

Why not start a Hamsadhwani NRI friends club? Your reaction please.

You, the performing artistes are requested to use your good offices with your NRI relatives and friends to contribute to such a fund apart from yours so that we can attain self sufficiency in organising an NRI festival of music & dance every year on an ever larger scale. May be we can offer you a platform as and when you visit Chennai even during the other months of the year.

Please email your reply to mail ID: hamsa_dhwani@rediffmail.com or Fax your messages to (Fax number) 91 - 44 - 490 1700.

Awaiting your positive and early response,
R Ramachandran &  P Ramakrishnan
Secretaries, Hamsadhwani
