CASSETTE REVIEW
Cassette title:
Isai
Kolam Isai Kolam, a cassette marketed by Carnatica, is a collection of popular songs rendered by the young and upcoming vocalist, Nisha Rajagopal. The highlight of this cassette is that the singer has chosen to present a variegated fare of songs in different languages and by various composers, instead of concentrating on a particular theme. The singer, endowed with a pleasant voice, has also laid emphasis on song rendition rather than on elaborate alapanas or other creative elements. This makes it the cassette more suitable for a lay person. The violinist, Nagai Sriram, has shadowed the performer all through. His precise alapana in Kalyani is commendable. Mridangist Tanjavur Kumar has contributed his mite to the music. The slow tempo overall (including songs like ‘eppO VaruvArO’) makes this cassette an ideal choice for a beginner’s collection.
Cassette:
Sri Vishnu Sahasra Namavali Raganjali Pushpa Anand, a disciple of the late M L Vasantakumari and currently under the tutelage of P S Narayanswami, has rendered a cassette of ‘Vishnu Sahasra Namavali’ in 20 ragas. Gaanarasa Audio, Mylapore, has brought out this compilation in a 2-volume pack. The rendition starts with the Dhyana sloka ‘kshIrodhanvatpradEshE' and is followed by the nAmAvaLi in various ragas like Hamsadhwani, Mohanam, Hamirkalyani, Sahana, Kalyani and Hindolam, to mention a few. The second cassette continues with the nAmAvaLi and ends with the Lakshmi stuti, ‘lakshmIm kshIra samudrarAja tanayA’. Ragas like Yamunakalyani, Kapi, Malayamarutam and Sindhubhairavi have found a place in this volume. The nAmAvaLi has been rendered to the backdrop of serene flute music. The concept is new and has opened doors for combining mantras and music. The rendition is soothing and will be a good addition to the collection of the spiritually inclined. V
