AWARDS ROUND-UP

Chitravina N Ravikiran's album for Naxos Records, Rays and Forays, was a finalist for the Best Contemporary World Album in the 5th annual New Age Voice Music Awards for 2001. It was a collaboration between top international artistes - Glen Velez, Jovino Santos Neto, Poovalur Srinivasan, Qui Xia He, and the late Khanjira wizard G Harishankar. The CD had also made it to several Top 10 and Top 20 charts. Ravikiran is the first Indian to receive this honour.

Dr. K J Yesudas' fans will be delighted to hear that he has been chosen to receive the title of Sangeeta Kala Sikhamani from the Indian Fine Arts Society. This award will be given to him during the Madras Music Mela on December 18, 2002. Senior danseuse Saroja Vaidyanathan will simultaneously be honoured with the title of Natya Kala Sikhamani.

In another exciting development, Karthik Fine Arts has also announced its awards for the Madras Music Mela 2002! Young vocalist T M Krishna has been chosen for the title of Isai Peroli, while danseuse Priya Murali will be conferred the title of Natanamamani. Dr. Sirgazhi Sivachidambaram will receive the special award of Tamizh Isai Vendar for his contribution to Tamil Isai. The D K Pattammal award, an endowment created by last year's Isai Peroli Nityasree Mahadevan, will go to Visalakshi Nityanand. The Sabha's own member D S Ramanujam will be recognised for his outstanding services to music through the award of Best Cultural Organiser. All these awards will be presented during Karthik Fine Arts' December Music festival commencing on December 1, 2002.

Carnatica earlier carried a flash news about the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy award, Sangeeta Kala Sironmani, which is to be conferred on violin legend M S Gopalakrishnan. Another accomplished violinist, A Kanyakumari, will receive the title of Sangeeta Kala Nipuna from the Mylapore Fine Arts Club. These awards will be given away during the December music festivals by the respective Sabhas.

Like last year, we will try to bring you interviews with each of these artistes.
