LALGUDI G JAYARAMAN
      

Musical background: Born to Gopala Iyer and Savitri Ammal, Jayaraman, popularly known as ‘Lalgudi’, has the unique distinction of being in the direct lineage of Rama Iyer, a disciple of Tyagaraja. Well-directed training under his father and paternal uncle Kandaswami Bhagavatar laid the foundation for Lalgudi's music. He had the benefit of assimilating the diverse styles of different stalwarts as an accompanist even when very young. Today, he is certainly one of the legends in the field of violin playing.

Region: He was born at Lalgudi, Tamilnadu.

      

Contribution: As a composer par excellence, Lalgudi has a carved a niche for himself. Be it varnams, kritis or tillanas, his compositions bear his stamp and enjoy immense popularity both in the music and dance circles. The unique feature of his compositions is the rhythmic patterns he weaves into them, without losing out on aesthetics. He has also composed for a special thematic ballet, entitled Jaya Jaya Devi, on Goddess Devi, which was premiered in the US and became a thumping success.

Languages used: Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit.

Popular compositions: Tillanas in Ragas like Mohanakalyani, Desh, Kapi  etc and Varnams like Senthil mevum (Neelambari), Neevenannu (Ranjani).
