He started training in music at the age of five and took vocal lessons from Alathur Srinivasa Iyer and Alathur Panchapakesa Iyer. He also learnt flute from K V Rajarama Iyer, mridangam from his illustrious brother Ramachandra Iyer and ghatam from K M Vaidyanathan. Competent in all the above, he choose to be a percussionist providing able support on mridangam and ghatam to eminent musicians and performed extensively all over the country. He also trained several students.
