One of the greatest stalwarts of mridangam, Murugabhoopati hailed from a family of scholarly musicians like his father Chitsabhai Servai and brother Sankara Sivam, from whom he also imbibed his musical skills. A contemporary of Palghat Mani Iyer, he was one of the Mridangam Trinity of those days, the other two being Palghat Mani Iyer himself and Palani Subramanyam Pillai. Needless to say, he was one of the most sought-after accompanists.
