Vipanchee Dance Fest

Vipanchee, recently celebrated its December dance fest and chose to honour young musicians and dancers like Rajesh Vaidya (Vina) Selva Ganesh (Khanjira), Narendra (Dancer), and Kavitha Ramu (Dancer), with the title ‘Yuva Kala Vipanchee’. Unlike the regular festivals of different dance schools in Chennai, Vipanchee gave platform to young talents from other dance schools. Janaki Visweshwaran, a disciple of guru Jayanthi Subramaniam and Priyadarshini Govind performed on the inaugural day. The programme commenced with an unusual number, the 'Nandi Teermaanam'  in praise Nandi, the bull, the vehicle of Lord Siva. This was followed by a Siva stuti ‘Neela Kanttha Mahadeva’ in raga Vasantha set to Adi tala Tisra gati. Both the numbers were enjoyably decorated with different karanas. Jayanthi Subramaniam rendered the first number with a firm grip on the rhythm. Further, her rendition and choreography of jatis with complex mathematical calculations need special mention. The Atana varnam of Turaiyur Rajagopala Sharma remained the anchor of the recital. Both the abhinaya and the nritta portions were handled well. However Janaki would need to work more on her aramandi. Both the abhinaya numbers - the Javali in Saveri and the Padam ‘Eppadi Manam Tunindado Swami’ in Huseni revolved round the second woman concept. The choreography of these two numbers by Priyadarshini Govind were laudable. The brisk tillana of Rajasekharan proved Janaki’s skill in handling the korvais with ease. The Padma Seshadri sisters Randhini and Roshini on vocal, Nellai Kannan on the Mridangam and Seetarama Sharma on the Violin would share the credit of extending solid support from the orchestral side.
