Matured Expressions

Sangeetha Eashwar’s Bharatanatyam recital for Natyaarpana at the Raga Sudha Hall, Chennai on 10th January 2001 was a real treat to the rasikas. A disciple of Padmabhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan and Savithri Jagannatha Rao, Sangeetha rose to the expectation of the dance and music lovers. Her matured expressions mirrored her years of rigorous practice and dedication to the art form. The recital commenced with the traditional ' Pushpanjali' followed by the Viruttam ‘Santakaram’. A Varnam in Latangi was the central number in which the audience witnessed delightful sancharis elaborating on Muruga’s acquisition of six heads, slaying of the demon Soorapadman and his marriage to Valli and Devayani. The sancharis were crisp yet unfolded the stories. The Padam of Kshetragna in Ragamalika was rendered with grace. The kriti ‘Nagumomu’ in Abheri, which is commonly heard in music concerts, was taken up in the post varnam session and was pinned with effective and enjoyable sancharis.

The violinist Srinivasan with his fine solo playing for the sancharis literally boosted the already effective bhava. The recital concluded with the Tillana in Kadanakutoohalam composed by the living legend Dr. M Balamuralikrishna. It not only brought out the talent of the dancer, but also the ability of the singer Radha Bhadri. Radha acquitted herself well in every item with her clear diction. The choreography challenged the mridangist Ramesh Babu who accepted it with a smile. His fingers literally danced with every move of the dancer’s foot and the brilliant nattuvangam of the guru, Savithri Jagannatha Rao.
