FINE PORTRAYAL

Two talented upcoming artistes Priya Subramanian and Ramya Seshadri from Kalasagara, Chennai, recently presented a fine Bharatanatyam recital for Natyaarpana’s Bharatanatya Vizha 2001. Ramya’s rendition for the initial number ‘Pushpanjali’ kept the audience spellbound. This was followed by Priya’s presentation of the Dikshitar kriti ‘Kanjadalayatakshi’ in raga Kamalamanohari. In this item, Priya beautifully portrayed the lotus-eyed Kamakshi of Kanchi. She brought out the bhakti-bhava well, creating the mood of bhakti amongst the rasikas. The Shanmukhapriya Varnam ‘Deva Munivar Tozhum Padan’ occupied the central position, in which the dancers elaborated on the episodes of Rama, Vamana and Koorma Avataras etc.

One cannot forget to mention the choreographic skill of guru Malathi Thothadri. The jatis and sancharis were found to be evenly distributed among the dancers and thus made the programme even more enjoyable. The dancers did a wonderful job while presenting the jatis. They made complete use of the stage that was available to them. The audience were able to obtain a fine audio-visual treat of two popular numbers ‘Natanam Aadinar’ in raga Vasanta and Kanaka Dasa’s song in Yamankalyani ‘Krishna Nee Begane’. The rhythmical coherence of Malathi’s jatis and the teermanams with well-designed tala-gati, were impressive. Sudarshana on the vocal with a clear diction of the lyrics added lustre to the show. Karaikkudi Sriram on the mridangam although enthusiastic in filling the gaps of karvais, was not clear in giving the arudis and teermanams. Bhagyalakshmi on the flute and Radha Venkatesan on the vina extended considerable support in the lead section.
