ENJOYABLE TREAT

Indumathi, disciple of Malathi Thothadri a Bharatanatyam recital recently at the Raga Sudha Hall, Chennai. The Gambheeranata Mallari was a choosy starting number set to Khanda jati Triputa tala, which gave ample evidence of her firm command over rhythm. The soft kriti ‘Muruga Muruga’ in raga Saveri was a sharp contrast to the Mallari. This abhinaya-oriented number of hers helped her prove herself. Her charming face remained an asset and supported her in bringing out the desired expressions with ease. The Varnam ‘Mohamaana En Meedu’ remained the anchor of the recital and was not only an acid test for the dancer but also for the guru, handling the cymbals (nattuvangam), the young vocalist Sudarshana and the mridangist Karaikkudi Sriram.

The choreography of the item needs special mention as it involved the Tattimettu not only in Chaturasram, but in all the five jaatis. The rendition of the jatis by guru Malathi and the dancer’s performance of the same were well up to the mark. The post-Varnam session comprised ‘Sri Venkatesam Bhajami’ in raga Kalyanavasantam and the Padam ‘Aduvum Solluvaal’ in raga Sowrashtra. Both were presented in an enjoyable manner, with crisp sancharis. Srinivasan on the flute and Radha Venkateswaran on the vina offered a grand treat with apt and well-balanced tanams and fillers for the sancharis. Violin Maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman’s brisk Tillana in Mohanakalyani remained the concluding number. One could definitely guarantee that Indumathy has a great future in the ocean of classical dances.
