Showcasing Dedication

On 9th September 2001, Deepika David, an upcoming artiste from Bangalore, offered a wonderful treat to the eyes and ears of  Chennaiites at Raga Sudha Hall. Deepika has rigorously trained in the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam under her guru Padmini Ramachandran. The Dikshitar kriti ‘Vatapi Ganapatim’ flagged off her performance with brisk, pure dance sequences and crisp sancharis as Lord Ganesha’s acquisition of the elephant head. Varnam is an item that brings out the dancer’s maturity in handling brisk jatis and fine facial expressions. Deepika chose to present ‘Maye Mayan Sodariye’ in raga Todi set to Adi tala. Guru Padmini handled the nattuvangam with dignity. The lyrics of this varnam were catchy, giving enough room for sancharis

Guru Padmini’s choreography needs special mention, for she had utilized all the opportunities available to fill the varnam with crisp yet interesting sancharis like the birth of Meenakshi, Her Digvijayam and so on. Janardhana Rao on the mridangam also extended considerable support with special effects and timely fillers wherever necessary. Deepika, although not of slim build, well crossed the hurdle with her sheer hard work and dedication. She was able to perform the Mandi adavus and karanas effortlessly. The thematic presentation on the ‘Ashta Vidha Nayikas’ was a good compilation by her guru. The concluding Tillana with korvais in all five jaatis was a real treat to watch. Jahnavi Jayaprakash’s voice gelled well with the flute by Narasimha Murthy and made the performance a memorable one.
