EXQUISITELY PLANNED

Vinodini Srikumar of Kerala was initiated into the art form of Bharatanatyam at the renowned dance school, Kalamandalam, Kerala. Her quest for learning more items brought her to Chennai. The choice of the Guru, Madurai R Muralidharan was apt. Muralidharan is himself a vaggeyakara for many dance compositions. Vinodini’s recent performance at the Raga Sudha Hall was a visual treat. The unusual Amritavarshini Pushpanjali was a fine prelude to the array of planned unique numbers. ‘Gambheera Natanam’, a song in praise of Lord Ganesha included an enjoyable chittaswaram. Matured expressions and fine nritta - that is Vinodini. Most of the items in the programme were compositions of her young guru, Muralidharan. Ambal stuti ‘Raja Rajeswari’ in raga Abheri, Misra Chapu tala and the Varnam in Abhogi were handled with consummate care. The post varnam session also included interesting numbers that gave enough room to display her mastery over abhinaya. The orchestral ensemble comprised new, yet experienced artistes for the Chennai platform. Vocal support extended by Ramamani Ramakrishnan, mridangam accompaniment by Pallaruti Narayanan, Palghat Subburaman’s following on the violin and Suryanarayanan’s fillers on the flute formed a well-balanced team.
