7-YEAR OLD GIRL GIVES A THRILLING PERFORMANCE

    
Azhagammai a student of Class III of DAV School, Gopalapuram, Chennai wasinitiated into Bharatanatyam at the tender age of 3. Fouryears of dedicated effort from the teacher and the student has ensured her Arangetram at the age of 7, the teacher being Tanjavur Rajalakshmi. Her item list was abalanced mix of traditional as well as contemporary numbers. Commencing with theTisra Alarippu, with her charming face she next danced the rather challenging Jatiswaram in raga Kalyani with ease and efficiency. The Sabdam 'Aadum Mayil'in ragamalika set to Misra Chapu Tala was handled with care and confidence. The Azhwar Pasuram ‘Pacchaimamalai Pol Meni’ was set in a Varnam format andchoreographed highlighting the Bhakti rasa to suit baby dancers like Aghagammai.Special credits for the tuning and choreography. Azhagammai's aramandi was perfect and each of her movements bespoke her confidence and her guru’s dedicated effort. 

'Natanam adinar' in Vasanta set to Khanda Jati Ata Tala was full of karanas.Tillana in raga Kanada set to Roopaka Tala reflected her sense of timing andher heart-throbbing performance thrilled the audience. The concluding number‘Aduga Oonjal’ in Neelambari was a lilting one in which she seemed to bring Lord Muruga live onstage. The handling of Nattuvangam by the proud guru was a treat to watch. Azhagammai was fortunate to have a bandof expert accompanists in Bhama Visweswaran (vocal), Adyar Balu (mridangam), P Venkataraman (violin), Muthukumar (flute) and P Munuswamy (Tanbura).
