REFINED PERFORMANCE

Anusha Venkataramani recently had her Rangapravesam (debut) at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai. The auspicious commencement with the prayers rendered by the students of Sri Bharatalaya probably prepared the stage for the grand show. Anusha started brightly with a Natesa Smaranam in Mohanam, instantly followed by the Chaturasra alarippu. The Varnam is a composite item that brings to fore the dancer’s ability to handle brisk jatis and portray the emotive aspects. The dancer’s level of understanding of the two basic aspects of dance, namely, nritta and abhinaya can well be judged in this number. Anusha chose to perform the varnam ‘Aadhaaram Neeye’ in raga Kharaharapriya that was a demonstration of her perfect understanding of the above-said concepts.

The gripping nattuvangam of Priya Murle and Padma S Raghavan, well supported by the young, multi-faceted percussionist K S R Aniruddha was a bonus to the audience. The ragas played between every number, sancharis and filler, not to mention the following of the song, were done by S Vijayaraghavan (violin), R Kannan (vina) and Sankaranarayanan (flute) with a level head, each playing their part without any overlap.

In the second half of the show, Durge Durge (padam) and the Narayana Teertha Tarangam ‘Govardhana Giridhara’ were handled with refinement. The vocalists Nandini Anand and T Krishnaveni sang in such perfect unison that one felt all along that it was a single vocalist. The programme reached its momentum in the Misra Chapu Tillana in the raga Valaji. The focal items such as the introductory number, varnam, padam and tillana were the compositions of the veteran composer Madurai N Krishnan. Anusha was energetic throughout the performance, which is nowadays a rare attribute found in young dancers.
