V V S GIVES THE BEST CONCERT OF THE SEASON SO FAR

Violin maestro V V Subramaniam opened his concert for the Music Academy on the 19th December 2000 with a Tana Varnam in raga Hamsanandi, his own composition. a masterly creation. The very commencement of the varnam created an impression that an hour's programme had already been gone through. The musical atmosphere was so wonderful! It was followed by one other composition of his in Sriraga. It was modeled after Dikshitar's samashticharana kritis.

The sparkling delineation of Pantuvarali in which he rendered Tyagaraja's 'Sivasiva', decorated by dazzling kalpanaswara passages were enough to satiate an earnest listener. Words are inadequate to describe the grandeur of his Todi alapana, with marked stages of development. It had all its educative, entertaining and aesthetic value in full measure. Budding violinists should have attended the concert for their own benefit. 'Srikrishnam bhaja' was the kriti taken up, for which full justice was done with neraval and kalpanaswaras.

V V Subramaniam's concert has so far been the top concert of this season. No exaggeration.

Trichur Narendran, a talented mridangist, gave full support to the uplift of the aesthetics of the concert. His Tani avartanam revealed a high standard. Vaikom Gopalakrishnan had his own ingenious tactics to produce sound effects on the ghatam, in addition to his rhythmic displays.
