SUGUNA PURUSHOTTAMAN AT MUSIC ACADEMY

The music of Suguna Purushottaman is a true replica of the great Musiri style through a feminine voice. There is no doubt that she has not only imbibed in full the style of the great doyen, but also developed wonderful powers of mastery over the domain of Pallavi-singing. Her rendition of Kambhoji and Bhairavi at her concert at the Music Academy this morning were exemplary. The gift of a little more powerful voice would easily place her on the top. Her Pallavi in Lakshmisa tala (one of the 108 talas) was par excellence. No accompanist can take her for granted!

She earlier started her concert with a Varnam in Sriranjani (Swamini of Papanasam Sivan), and followed it up with a rare composition of Ramaswami Sivan in Janaranjani, 'Kunjara mukhane'. Her rendition of Tyagaraja's 'Teliyaleru rama' and Syama Sastri's masterpiece in Poorvikalyani, 'Ninnuvinaga mari' were a class by themselves. While rendering them, she could bring out striking glimpses of her guru's bani. It is worth mentioning that Suguna could exercise restraint without indulging in kalpanaswaras for the opening items of the concert, as is the usual trend among the upcoming artistes today. Her kalpanaswaras for 'Ninnuvinaga' at 'Mari dikkevvaru' with a terminating Ma Ri, which doubled as a swarakshara, was not only novel but also interesting.

The violinist G Chandramouli always proves himself an able hand for any vocalist. Tanjore Kumar on the mridangam is a seasoned percussionist.
