SUBHA GANESAN AT MUSIC ACADEMY- NERVOUS PRESENTATION

Subha Ganesan, who got a long overdue break at the Music Academy this year, seemed overawed by the occasion and gave a below average performance. Hailing from a respected musical lineage and having had the privilege of learning from the late M L Vasantakumari, one expected her to win accolades with her performance on 18th December 2000. However, this was not to be. She seemed to have a pronounced voice problem throughout and her ideas were not in sync with her execution.

'Sarasiruhasana' in Nata, a composition of Puliyur Doreswamy Iyer gave a shaky start to the concert. Dhanyasi alapana had certain phrases of class and the artiste strove to present it in a respectable manner, with classical flavour. 'Dhyaname' a masterpiece of Tyagaraja, seems to have become the favorite of musicians in recent times. This artiste however could not come to terms with this kriti. Her rendition of Malayamarutam was good in parts. The relatively rare piece of Patnam Subramanya Iyer, 'Dhanyudevvado'. did not really appeal. Ragam Tanam Pallavi in Kalyani was the central piece of the concert. The artiste seemingly got into the groove. Her alapana was presented with ample Vina phrasings and appropriate use of gamakas. This was a welcome feature. The tanam was average and the Pallavi didn't do justice to her competence.

She definitely revealed a sense of maturity in her presentation and it was obvious that she had put in a lot of hard work. One only hopes that she will reach her potential soon. Pakkala Ramdas (violin) and Tiruvidaimarudur Sankaran (mridangam) were the accompanists.
