MANDOLIN SRINIVAS' MUSIC ACADEMY CONCERT

The outstanding exuberant outburst, full of idiosyncracies and oddities, just suiting the exigencies of the chosen instrument, serve only as hurdles in appreciating the very many points of excellence, which U Srinivas produces over his Mandolin. He possesses tremendous capacities, characterised by vidwat in dealing with different branches of creativity or manodharma (raga alapana, tanam, neraval and kalpanaswaras) and also in the rendition of compositions. Everything he plays is only in the second or third gear. Perhaps he cannot help it. But it must be admitted that he has tamed a wild elephant.

His handling of Keeravani in his concert at the Music Academy on 23rd December 2000 was superb. He displayed some of the tactics with particular reference to the handling of the instrument. For instance, he touched the anumandra panchama and the atitara shadja during his forays in the raga alapana of the same. The Pallavi which he had set up in Keeravani in Adi tala with a sama eduppu proved suitable beyond measure for being handled on his instrument, while at the same time providing ample scope for the rhythmic supporters.

Vellore Ramabhadran (mridangam), T V Vasan (ghatam) and Selvaganesh (khanjira) provided an entertaining Tani avartanam, full of joy. Particular mention must be made of the achievements of Selvaganesh, who produces amazing aesthetic effects on the Khanjira. It was a blend of melodious rhythm and rhythmic melody.

The Tyagaraja kriti in Atana, 'Mummoortulu' which Srinivas took up earlier was not up to the mark to a well-informed listener. S D Sridhar on the violin didn't lose his stand in providing quality accompaniment. His Keeravani was very good.
