SANGEETHA KRISHNAMURTHY - IN THE STEPS OF HER GURU

Sangeetha Krishnamurthy, a disciple of Sudha Raghunathan, performed in Mylapore Fine arts Club on 24th December 2000. The concert started with the Hamsadhwani Varnam. 'Sadachaleswaram' a Dikshitar kriti, in the raga Bhoopalam, starting beautifully with swarakshara, was the next item. The raga alapana in Vasantabhairavi was praiseworthy. The familiar kriti of Tyagaraja 'Needayarada' followed. The sancharas and brigas in the raga alapana reminded one of her guru.

The next kriti of the concert was 'Ninnada' in the raga Kannada set to Adi tala, composed by Tyagaraja. The kalpanaswaras were appended beautifully and sung with confidence. 'Ninne Nammitinayya', a kriti composed by Mysore Vasudevachar was the item that followed a brief alapana in the raga, Simhendramadhyamam. It was quite surprising that every bit of the raga alapana spoke that she is the disciple of Sudha Ragunathan. The neraval and swaras for 'Pannagendra sayana' was good.

Young Akkarai Subhalakshmi accompanied the vocalist gently but confidently. She has had her formal traning in violin from her father Akkarai Swaminathan. Nellai Balaji, on the mridangam also performed well, within the limited time provided for him. The concluding piece of the concert was 'Sumarasa' in the raga Revati.

AUDIENCE VIEWS:

Mrs. P Lalitha and P Subbulakshmi says that the concert was good and she reflects Sudha's style exactly. On the contrary, one Mrs. Sharada felt that she can come out with her own style and not just follow her guru's pattern of raga singing. Mr. Venkatraghavan said that she performs very well and that very soon she will reach great heights. Mr. C Balasubramaniam said that he had heard her concert at Bangalore when she was a small girl and that from then he has made it a point to listen to her concerts regularly.
