SAKETHARAMAN - A LONG WAY TO GO

Saketharaman a young disciple of violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman sang at the Mylapore Fine Arts Club on 23rd December 2000. Accompanied by Nagai Sriram (violin) and K V Gopalakrishnan (mridangam), he commenced with a varnam in Charukesi, a composition of Lalgudi Jayaraman. This was followed by Gopalakrishna Bharati's popular kriti, 'Sabhapatikku veru daivam' in Abhogi. Tyagaraja's 'Niravadhi sukhada' in Ravichandrika, rendered briskly set the pace for the concert.

Saketharaman then took up Pantuvarali for elaboration. The raga essay revealed his efforts and the training he has received. Tyagaraja's 'Raghuvaranannu' was rendered with neraval and kalpanaswaras at the charana line 'Manasuna neeke'. It was quite a praiseworthy effort. The main raga of the day was Kharaharapriya, in which he rendered Tyagaraja's 'Pakkala nilabadi'. The concert concluded with a viruttam followed by Lalgudi's Tillana in Brindavanasaranga.
