MANI KRISHNASWAMI AT MUSIC ACADEMY - A DISAPPOINTMENT

In the music of Mani Krishnaswami, nobody can have occasion to hear a wrong, false or an improper note. Earlier, her concerts always used to be glamorous, full of bright exposition with all pristine purity of melody and rhythm. It might not have been thought-provoking with startling commitments beyond expectations, but her music was always characterised by convention and tradition.

However, all those who have cherished such ideas of her music were sadly bound to feel disappointed after her concert at the Music Academy on the 18th December this season. It was quite evident that she was a little unwell. She couldn't soar to heights. She would have herself realised it during her concert.

She used the full support of her able disciple in singing portions of the raga essays that she took up. Her Dhanyasi (Namoralaginchi) was meaningful and a lesson for her music students. Her raga essays of Kedaragowla (Saraguna palimpa) and Kharaharapriya were quite docile though, and appeared like classroom teaching. 'Nadachi nadachi' was a welcome choice. Her other items included a Varnam in Mandari, 'Mahaganapatim' (Nata) and 'Needumurti' (Natakurinji).

M R Gopinath's approach was absolutely faithful, never exceeding the limits. His raga essays were scrupulously clean. J Balaji gave his full support, while Lata Ramachar exhibited tremendous restraint in handling the Khanjira which, on many occasions, proves noisy.
