LALITHA KRISHNAN AT NUNGAMBAKKAM CULTURAL ACADEMY

Lalitha Krishnan, disciple and daughter-in-law of violin maestro Lalgudi G Jayaraman, performed at the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy on 29th December 2000. The accompaniments were Srinivasan on the violin and Anil Kumar on the mridangam.

To start with, she sang 'Tapulanniyu', Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar's kriti in the raga Bowli. She then rendered Annamacharya's 'Itaraadevagala', in the raga Bahudari with a few rounds of kalpanaswaras at the charanam. Following this, she took up Shanmukhapriya in which she rendered a raga alapana and presented the popular kriti of Papanasam Sivan, 'Aandavane unnai nambinen', set to Roopaka tala. Her alapana in Shanmukhapriya seemed to be very light. Her next choice was Oothukadu Venkata Subbayyar's 'Aadadu Asangadu va kanna' in the raga Madhyamavati.

The main raga was Sankarabharanam. She rendered raga alapana followed by the kriti 'Manasu swadheenamai', a wonderful kriti of Tyagaraja in Misra Chapu tala. Her post-main section included Arunachala Kavi's 'Kanden kanden seetayai' in Bagesri, 'Hare Venkatesa' in Sidhubhairavi and Lalgudi's Tillana in Durga. Lalitha Krishnan has got a good voice with a capacity to sing the finer nuances. However, she must pay attention to the sruti.
