KADRI GOPALNATH AT THE MYLAPORE FINE ARTS CLUB

Kadri Gopalnath performed in the Mylapore Fine Arts Club, on the 28th of December with Kanyakumari on the violin, Haridwaramangalam A K Palanivel (Special Tavil), B Rajasekhar on the Morsing and Sukanya Ramgopal on the Ghatam.

The Navaragamalika varnam, 'Valachivacchi' was the opening item. The majestic 'Vatapi Ganpatim', a Dikshitar kriti, in the raga Hamsadhwani was played next. Kalpanaswaras at 'Haradi guruguha toshita bimbam', set the pace for the concert. The popular Pancharatna kriti of Tyagaraja, 'Endaro mahanubhavulu', which he took up next gave a superb feeling.

He then gave a brief outline of the raga Jayantasri and rendered Tyagaraja's well-known kriti 'Marugelara'. Kalpanaswaras were played for the pallavi itself. It was very enjoyable when Kanyakumari reproduced on the violin exactly what he played on the Saxophone. Once in a while, a Vivadi raga gives a different feeling. "Maara vairi ramani', in the 70th melakarta raga Nasikabhooshani set to Tisra gati Adi tala, brought a different atmosphere in the concert.

Again a Prati madhyama raga, Kamavardhini was played after an outline of the raga. The Tyagaraja kriti, 'Raghuvara nannu' was the kriti that was played with kalpanaswaras at the charanam in an extraordinary speed, which was equally well-rendered by Kanyakumari on the violin. Next was 'Vanchatonuna', kriti of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, in the raga Karnaranjanai.

His choice for the main item was a different raga, Chandrakouns, for which both the main and accompaniment artistes played an excellent alapana. Most of the audience could not make out the raga from the alapana as it was kind of rare. Once again the necessity for announcing the items was felt among the audience and made the hall a bit chaotic. Soon after he finished the raga alapana, somebody from the audience stood up and asked what raga it was and then the artiste announced it. The wonderful Tanam was followed by a Pallavi. He sang the pallavi once in the mike which was not very clear. The starting of the pallavi was 'Arunachalanilaye sri mahadeva', set to Adi tala, 2-kalai. The kalpanaswaras were enjoyable. The Tani avartanam by Palanivel was really special. Although the volumes of the Morsing and Ghatam were a little low in comparison to the Tavil, the artistes revealed their prowess on their instruments. The Tani avartanam received a great applause.

The tukkada (post-main) section of the concert had several hit numbers like Subramanya Bharati's 'Ettanaikoti inbam' (Ahirbhairavi), Annamacharya's 'Tandananaahi' (Bowli), the Magudi (on someone's request, which turned out to be the highlight of the concert), Purandaradasa's 'Jagadoddharana' (Kapi), 'Tamburi meetidava' (Sidhubhairavi) and 'Bhagyadalakshmi baramma' (Madhyamavati).

AUDIENCE VIEWS:

R Sumathi: Kadri's saxophone concert was extremely good, not to mention the accompanists, who were equally good. He selected a raga which were not familiar with. We enjoyed it and also had a chance to familiarise ourselves with it.

V Balakrishnan: I have been listening to Kadri's saxophone for 11 years now and have heard over 100 concerts. I never tire of his music. I forget the world in his concerts.

T S Rajendran: The Mylapore Fine Arts Club is the only place in which Kadri Gopalnath has showed his full talents.

D Janakiraman: It is excellent to hear Kadri's Saxophone accompanied by great accompanists. We have been regularly listening to Haridwaramangalam Palanivel play for Kadri's Saxophone. Though it is delightful to our ears, we want, for a change, Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam or Mannargudi Easwaran on the Mridangam as accompaniments.

Suchitra: Kadri's saxophone is divine. It is a feast to our ears. Needless to say, Kanyakumari's violin is exceptional. A royal touch is given by Palanivel. Credit should be given to Sukanya Ramgopal for having reached this level, especially as a woman accompaniment.
