December 1, 2002

My first concert was at Sri Kamakshi Amman temple, Madley Road, West Mambalam. It was a 2 ½  hour concert and I was accompanied by Padma Sankar (Violin) and Sankaranarayanan (Mridangam). The list included Paratpara (Vachaspati), Sri Kamakshi (Saranga, Annasami Sastri), and Dakshinamurte (Sankarabharanam). I enjoyed the concert as I love singing in temples. The audience responded well.

My date with Karthik Fine Arts! Just the previous day, my eyes started developing conjunctivitis (‘Madras Eye’ or should I say ‘Chennai eye’?!). Call it what you may but I was there with my dark glasses. With the support of Akkarai Subhalakshmi (Violin), Papanasam Kumar (Mridangam) and N Guruprasad (Ghatam), I took ‘Kartikeya’ (Todi) as the main piece. The other items were ‘Karunimpa (Sahana Varnam), Gajavadana (Sriranjani), Mariveregati (Anandabhairavi, Syama Sastri), Garudagamana (Nagaswaravali) and Paripoornakama (Poorvikalyani, Tyagaraja). My personal feeling was that Anandabhairavi alapana came out well and also the neraval for the Todi piece at Malmaruga shanmukha.

Audience response: “How did you manage with the eye problem? You did well in spite of it, and the concert was enjoyable.”

One rasika was unhappy that I had chosen Todi. It seems he had already had an overdose of that raga in the season! Well, how can an artist sing season concerts in a row without touching Todi? Anyway I have packed my Todi for 2002 and dear rasika, do reappear - no more Todi from me this season!

My eyes were still bad and I was wearing the dark glasses (specially procured for this music season!). The concert was at Krishna Gana Sabha. I had been thinking about this concert for sometime, trying not to repeat what I had already sung there earlier this year. I was accompanied by Nagai Sriram on Violin and Mannarkoil J Balaji on Mridangam.

I started with ‘Saraseeruhasanapriye (Nata) followed by Pahijagatjanani (Vachaspati), Anandanatanaprakasam (Kedaram) and Balakrishnan Padamalar (Dhanyasi). The last was a piece I had been wanting to sing at KGS for sometime. Sri Chamundeswari (Bilahari) was the interlude which rasikas welcomed. After Chetasri Balakrishnam (Dwijavanti), I sang Kiravani, the main raga of the day, and the Tyagaraja kriti, Kaligiyundegada. J Balaji played a very interesting Tani. I rounded off the concert with ‘Kannanidam by Ambujam Krishna and a Kamas Tillana.

Audience response: Very encouraging

I personally enjoyed Dhanyasi and Kedaram. Incidentally this concert was reviewed in The Hindu by Gowri Ramnarayanan with the headline “Penchant for the Profound” on Friday, December 20, 2002.
