You, the rasika, deserve a pat! For, it is you who has contributed to the success of the Madras Music Mela in a big way. Your presence has been a constant source of inspiration for both performers and organisers over the centuries. You have been instrumental in identifying stars and grooming new talents. Your presence in the concerts has enabled musicians to realise their dreams and create history in the world of music. Despite the availability of other types of entertainment, you have chosen to enjoy and attain satisfaction through Carnatic music, the pride of Indian cultural. You deserve a pat for making the right choice!

 

So are these mere platitudes? No. This year, we are going to show our appreciation through proper action. We are hereby instituting the first-of-its-kind Rasika Awards. Carnatica will be giving these awards in association with Sri Krishna Sweets.

 

What do you need to do?

 

You have been the silent listener most of time, expressing your happiness or displeasure only through your applause, or occasionally, a few words. Here is a chance for you to be more pro-active. We, Carnatica and Krishna Sweets will be your link to the artistes and organisers. Give us your valuable opinions and suggestions, and we will convey the same to the concerned people. Not just that, you can win prizes for expressing your opinions!

 

How does the Rasika Award work?

 

The rules are simple and there are many categories for which you could win a prize.

 

  • Attending the maximum number of concerts during the season, between December 15, 2002 and January 1, 2003. You will only have to submit a detailed report of all the concerts you attend. The details should include the names of the performing artistes, Sabha, venue, list of songs with ragas from the beginning till the end of the concert.
  • Giving the best detailed report on a concert along with a review of the concert.
  • Attending the maximum number of 1. junior-slot concerts, 2. peak-time concerts, 3. lec-dems, 4. morning concerts. Assessment will be done on a weekly basis.
  • Writing the best review with intricate technical details - Special Connoisseur award
  • Attending concerts of different slots (morning, afternoon, late afternoon and prime-time) in different Sabhas.
  • Attending the concerts of the maximum number of artistes (Junior and Senior will be awarded separately)
  • Attending the maximum number of Vocal / Instrumental / Jugalbandi / Fusion concerts (each category will be awarded separately)

 

The awards will be distributed on January 6, 2003 at the valedictory function of Carnatica’s Sangeetanubhava festival 2002-2003 at Jayamahal Hall, Shrine Velankanni School, T Nagar, Chennai 600 017 in the presence of the Governor of Tamilnadu.

 

Who is eligible?

 

Practically everyone! To make it easier for us to take into account your interest levels, your constraints and to evaluate you fairly, we are dividing all the contestants into three separate groups:

  • Children less than 15 years of age

  • Women

  • General

In order to make it easy for you to note down all the details of the concerts that you attend, Carnatica has designed a special Rasika Booklet! You can collect it from our offices (addresses given below) or at any branch of Sri Krishna Sweets (T Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, Adyar and Annanagar).
