VEDAVALLI RECEIVES THE SANGEETA KALANIDHI

    
Senior vocalist R Vedavalli received the coveted Sangeeta Kalanidhi at a glittering function at the annual Sadas (the closing of the Music Academy Conference) yesterday. The dignitaries on the dais included Dr. R V Vaidyanatha Iyer, Secretary to the Union department of Culture, who presented the award (comprising a citation and a sum of Rs.10,000/-) to Smt. Vedavalli, and other important office bearers of the Academy like the President T T Vasu, Vice-President Vaideeswaran, Ms. Maithreyi Ramadurai, Mrs. Sulochana Pattabhiraman and Mrs. Nandini Ramani.

    

The title of Sangeeta Kala Acharya was presented to vidwan S Ramachandran and Vina vidushi Ranganayaki Rajagopalan. This comprised a cash award of Rs. 5,000/-. The TTK Awards consisting of a sum of Rs.2,500/- each, went to Khanjira vidwan V Nagarajan and the veteran of Tavil, Haridwaramangalam A K Palanivel. Tanjavur Sankara Iyer received the Contemporary Vaggeyakara award, comprising a sum of Rs.2,000/-.
   

Several awards for the concerts during the season were also given out. Among the important awardees were Suguna Purushottaman (Yogam Nagaswamy award), T N Seshagopalan (Sanskrit / Tamil compositions), Trichur Ramachandran, Maharajapuram Ramachandran, Rajkumar Bharathi and Geetha Raja (Best raga rendering), O S Thyagarajan and Sangeetha Sivakumar (Neraval singing), Gayathri Girish (Kalpanaswaram), Rudrapatnam brothers (Slokam/viruttam), Bhooshani Kalyanaraman (Tyagaraja kritis), Mambalam sisters (Vivadi ragas), Seetha Narayanan and Vijay Siva (Best Pallavi), S Sowmya (Outstanding lady vocalist), Aruna Sayeeram and party (Best senior concert), Sanjay Subramanian (Talented musician),  T M Krishna (Best performing artistes' award), S P Ramh (Best sub-senior concert), Sriram Parthasarathy (Best junior concert), E Gayathri (Vina Shanmukhavadivu award), Latchappa Pillai (Eminent nagaswara vidwan), M A Krishnaswamy (Best senior violinist), R Hemalatha (Outstanding young violinist), Visalakshi Nityanand (Best junior vocalist scholarship), Melakaveri Tyagarajan (Best sub-senior violinist scholarship), Koviladi Madhwa Prasad (Best junior mridangist) and R Thyagarajan (Flute Mali award). The morning session (lec-dems) awards were bagged by Sister Bastin Margaret, Sriram Parasuram and Anita Ratnam. The best dancer of the conference award went to Ratna Papa Kumar.
